New Downtown Punta Gorda Roundabout

Punta Gorda drivers can look forward to smoother commutes as a newly constructed roundabout is now open in the heart of downtown. The long-anticipated traffic improvement has officially opened on Thursday and is designed to enhance safety and reduce congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections.

Local resident Jim Amontre shared his thoughts on the new roundabout:
“The first time I encountered a roundabout was out in Colorado, and I wasn’t exactly sure how to navigate it,” Amontre said. “But once I got the hang of it, I realized it made traffic flow much better.”

For many Punta Gorda residents, the real challenge has been enduring the months of construction near U.S. 41 and Carmalita Street. But with the roundabout now complete, there’s renewed hope for more efficient traffic movement and long-term infrastructure improvements.

“It’s a smart move for the future of traffic control,” Amontre added. “As Punta Gorda continues to grow, modern solutions like this are necessary to handle the increased volume.”

According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the primary goal of the roundabout is to improve road safety while also supporting the continued growth and revitalization of downtown Punta Gorda.

Some residents have expressed concerns about how the nearby traffic light at U.S. 41 and Taylor Road might impact the new traffic pattern. Specifically, they fear that the signal could cause backups into the roundabout.

FDOT officials responded by confirming that they will initially adjust the signal timing at Taylor Road. Eventually, control of the traffic light will return to Charlotte County, which will be able to manage timing remotely for better responsiveness to local conditions.

During the planning and design phases, FDOT did factor in the nearby Taylor Road intersection, as it falls within the broader scope of the traffic improvement project.

As Punta Gorda drivers adapt to this new setup, transportation officials are urging everyone to take their time, drive cautiously, and obey all posted signage while navigating the area.
